To free any of the maintenance ladders, power to the cell must be isolated first. Once the proper procedure to enter the cell has been followed and the robots have come to a controlled stop, the solenoids safeguarding the ladders are energized.

The maintenance personnel can retract the handle actuator from the head of the solenoid unit and move the ladders freely in the cell.

Power to the cell cannot be restored until the ladder is back to its designated location and the handle actuator has been reinserted back into the head of the unit. The solenoid in this solution has two safety circuits that have monitoring switches running in series: one switch for the solenoid, and one switch for the actuator.
